Mechanical Properties of Solids
A wire stretches under a load and springs back when released, until it does not. Chapter 8, Mechanical Properties of Solids, of the NCERT Physics textbook for Class 11 studies that boundary. You will define stress and strain, state Hooke's law, and measure Young's, shear and bulk moduli from experiment. The stress strain curve reveals elastic limit, yield and fracture, and elastic potential energy stored in a stretched wire is calculated. These ideas explain beams, bridges and the choice of materials.
