Consumer Rights
This chapter of the NCERT Class 10 Understanding Economic Development textbook, Chapter 5, traces the consumer movement in India and the need for protection in markets crowded with goods and services. It explains rights to safety, information, choice, representation, redressal and consumer education, with examples of adulteration, misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices. It describes the Consumer Protection Act of 1986 and its 2019 replacement, the three tier consumer courts, and how awareness, labelling and grievance procedures empower buyers.
